Modern property’s will have both systems, whereas older houses will most likely have one system combining the two. Not only should you consult an expert before digging, you should always discuss with councils and building regulations that the procedures you plan to take, and the materials you plan to use, are all regulated and compliant. Any pipes that are not brown or black may be non-compliant.
The underground drainage network is liable to cracking and general deterioration over time, so the network should include adequate inspection chambers and rodding access points to remove any blockages that could build up over time. This needs to be planned and thought through before the project goes ahead.

As mentioned before, whatever type of drainage system that you’re working on, it must have access points so that you can clean it and inspect its condition later down the line.
