110mm Underground

Types of Underground Pipes and Fittings.

There are two main types of underground systems: foul & surface. Any water coming from your bathroom, kitchen or utility room is conveyed as foul water, and surface water is simply rainwater coming from guttering and external systems. Modern property’s will have both systems, whereas older houses will most likely have one system combining the two. Undergoing a new project, you must look to have both systems separated and organised efficiently. Often an unsung hero in construction, underground drainage is an integral part of any property, and prevents damage on so many levels. With BDC bringing in huge trade discounts on our Underground range from Kalsi Plastics, we thought we’d delve deeper into the types of underground drainage, put together a checklist when installing an effective system, and look over the general benefits of using plastic in underground construction.

To make sure you can plan effectively and organise proceedings, always make sure you have the necessary diagrams and drawings indicating the underground networks and layouts. Please consult and expert if unsure.

Not only should you consult an expert before digging, you should always discuss with councils and building regulations that the procedures you plan to take, and the materials you plan to use, are all regulated and compliant. Any pipes that are not brown or black may be non-compliant.

The underground drainage network is liable to cracking and general deterioration over time, so the network should include adequate inspection chambers and rodding access points to remove any blockages that could build up over time. This needs to be planned and thought through before the project goes ahead.

Plastic Drain Chambers

As mentioned before, whatever type of drainage system that you’re working on, it must have access points so that you can clean it and inspect its condition later down the line. We supply plastic chamber basesrisers with sealing rings, cover and frames, to name just a few examples. These are made from high grade plastic materials and they are easy to set up.

Drainage Gullies and Gully Traps

Do you require any drainage gullies or gully traps? Then you need quality plastic products that are made to measure. These are designed to discharge downpipe and surface water etc, to regulate flowing material. Typical products include square top adapters, bottle gully grids, square or circular, and Gully traps. As with all our plastic products, these are made from the durable materials, which is designed to last, and have many benefits outline below.

Benefits of Plastics in Underground Pipework.

  • Lower density and weight as opposed to legacy materials; which lowers transport and installation costs.
  • Lower ‘modulus’, which means it has a certain degree of flexibility & therefore has a reduced risk of breakage and leakage.
  • Non-corrosive; being very resistant to chemicals.
  • Plastic pipes can be manufactured to larger lengths compared to legacy materials, meaning less joints and less potential for leakage. The larger lengths also allow for variable shapes and sizes making the project itself easier.
  • Pipes can be made from recycled materials, and has a proven second life, being 100% recyclable itself.
